The history of the birth and development of cars
Have you ever thought about what the problem would be if the car did not exist in the world? People use them to work, go to school, and visit their friends. Without a car, businessmen would still walk to work or ride horses, for example. Luckily, cars do exist, and get better and better as more inventions improve the product line. After all, the first car wasn’t as popular as the cars built today.
People have been thinking about cars since the Renaissance. An Italian named Guido da Vigevano planned a wind-powered car in 1335; even Leonardo da Vinci created the design for a tricycle; but the first real car was built in 1769 by a French inventor named Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot. This “car” is a three-wheeled tractor that can only go 2 miles per hour, which is slower than a person walking!
So that inventor Karl Benz worked. Benz was a German inventor who issued the first patent for a gasoline car in 1886, and he started selling his product in 1888. His wife, Mrs. Bertha Benz, was the first. take a long car trip. She took one of the Benz cars and drove it 66 miles, and invented brake linings along the way.
Then another German created the four-stroke engine that we see in most cars today. Nikolaus Otto built his engine in 1876, and because it was the first practical gas-powered engine, it made a huge impact on the way automobiles worked. The invention spread, and shops began to sell gas-powered cars. The first company to do this on a large scale in America was Olds Motor Works, started by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. By 1901, the company had sold 425 cars.
The Oldsmobile is very famous, but the creator of the automobile that almost every home must have was American businessman Henry Ford. He began experimenting with his own “Ford Quadricycle” in 1896. In 1901, Ford refined the design to create a 26-horsepower vehicle that could even race. He then introduced the car to the public and created the Henry Ford Company. This company later became the Cadillac Motor Company.
Then Ford created another business in 1903: Ford Motor Company. It was the same company that created and introduced the Model T automobile in 1908. The Model T was easy to drive, and cheap to repair. The car is on sale for only $895! Americans quickly began to buy and use the Model T in their daily lives. Ford then announced a new design, the Ford Model A, in 1927.
In the early 1930s, cars became fancier to help attract buyers. Finally more options were added such as more color options and different types of materials. A popular automobile created in 1938 by the Austro-German Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, the founder of the Porsche Company. His creation, the Volkswagen Beetle, quickly designed, and became one of the most popular automobiles of the 20th century.
The 1950s were when cars weren’t just for transportation anymore. Cars had removable “convertibles,” and in 1957, power steering, electric brakes, and air conditioning were new features that made the car more user-friendly. The 1960s cars improved for the better, and were more beautiful.
Cars have changed a lot over the years. Today, cars are even better and use less gas than in the past, like the Toyota Prius, which uses gas and electricity.
